Adhi Ratneswarar Temple is a major Shiva temple at Tiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Adhi Ratneswarar and Goddess Parvati as Snehavalli. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and one of the 14 Shiva temples of the Pandya region praised in the Thevaram hymns. Saint Thirugnanasambandar is associated with the Thevaram hymn of this temple. 🏛 Temple History

The temple has a traditional history associated with Vilvavanam, the sacred Vilva forest. According to the temple legend, Vaaruni, son of Varuna, was cursed with an elephant's body and goat's head and regained his original form after worshipping Shiva here. The name Tiruvadanai is traditionally linked to this story. Agastya, Markandeya and Kamadhenu are also said to have worshipped Shiva here.
