Pazhamudircholai is traditionally regarded as the sixth and final Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan. The temple is situated amidst the green forests of the Alagar Hills near Madurai. Lord Murugan is worshipped here along with Valli and Deivanai. The sacred setting of the hill and forest is an important part of the spiritual character of this temple.

Pazhamudircholai is associated with the ancient Tamil tradition of Murugan worship and is identified as one of the six Arupadai Veedu. The name Pazhamudircholai refers to a grove associated with ripe fruits. The temple is particularly famous for the traditional story of Avvaiyar and Lord Murugan, in which Murugan appeared as a young boy and tested the wisdom and humility of the celebrated Tamil poetess Avvaiyar. The temple is located in the forested Alagar Hills and forms an important part of the Murugan pilgrimage circuit.
