๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple is traditionally regarded as the third of the six Arupadai Veedu of Lord Murugan. The presiding deity, Dhandayuthapani Swamy, is worshipped in the form of a youthful ascetic holding the Dhandam (staff). Palani is one of the most important Murugan pilgrimage centres in Tamil Nadu.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The central legend of Palani is connected with the story of the divine fruit of wisdom. When Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati offered a fruit to their sons Ganesha and Murugan, a contest was proposed to determine who could circle the world first. Ganesha circled his parents, considering them the entire world, and won the fruit. Murugan became upset and left Mount Kailash. According to tradition, Murugan came to Palani and remained on the hill as a renunciate. Lord Shiva is said to have consoled him with the words "Pazham Nee", meaning "You are the fruit", which is traditionally associated with the name Palani. The idol of Dhandayuthapani Swamy is traditionally associated with the Siddhar Bhogar, who is believed to have created the image using a special medicinal mixture known as Navapashanam. The Bhogar shrine and cave are important features associated with the temple.
