๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu
Vedaranyam Thirumaraikadar Temple is one of the most important Shaiva temples of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Thirumaraikadar, also known as Vedaranyeswarar and Vedavaneswarar. The goddess is Vedanayaki, also known as Yazhai Pazhitha Menmozhi Ammai and Veenavadha Vidushani.
The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised by the three great Nayanmars โ Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar. It is traditionally counted as the 125th Shiva Sthalam in the Chola Nadu temples south of the Cauvery.
It is also one of the seven Saptha Vidanga temples. The Thyagaraja manifestation here is called Bhuvani Vidangar, and the associated sacred dance is Hamsapada Natanam.
The ancient name of Vedaranyam was Thirumaraikadu. The Tamil name literally reflects the tradition of the sacred Vedas being associated with the forest and temple.
According to the temple tradition, the four Vedas โ Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharvana โ assumed human form and worshipped Shiva here. The Vedas subsequently closed the temple doors. Much later, Appar and Tirugnanasambandar came to the temple and sang Thevaram hymns, causing the doors to open and establishing one of the most famous episodes in Tamil Shaiva tradition.
The temple has significant Chola-period history. The Tamil Wikipedia page records 98 Chola inscriptions, along with inscriptions from the Vijayanagara and Maratha periods.
The temple is also associated with Agastya, Vasishta, Gautama, Vishvamitra, Narada, Mandhata, Muchukunda Chakravarti and Sri Rama, who are traditionally said to have worshipped here.
