Agastheeswarar Temple at Agasthiyampalli is an important Shiva temple and a Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalam. The temple is traditionally associated with Sage Agastya, who is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here. The presiding deity is Agastheeswarar and the Goddess is worshipped as Pakambiriyal Nayagi, also known as Mangai Nayagi. The temple is also traditionally associated with the worship of Lord Yama.

🏛 Temple History

According to temple tradition, when Shiva and Parvati's divine wedding took place at Kailash, the gathering of celestial beings caused the northern part of the earth to become heavier. Shiva asked Sage Agastya to travel south to restore the balance of the earth. Agastya is believed to have worshipped Shiva at this sacred place, and Shiva is traditionally said to have appeared before him in his wedding form. The temple has historical inscriptions associated with the Chola and Pandya periods. Inscriptions from the reigns of Rajaraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola I and Kulothunga Chola I record grants and activities connected with the temple. The shrine therefore preserves important evidence of the medieval history of the region. The temple is praised in the Tevaram by Tirugnana Sambandar and is counted among the Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery southern-bank region.
