๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Idumbavanam, Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu
Idumbavanam Sarguneswarar Temple is one of the important Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery southern-bank Shaiva tradition. The temple is traditionally counted as the 108th Shiva shrine on the southern bank of the Cauvery and was praised by Tirugnanasambandar in the Thevaram.
The presiding deity is Sargunanathar, also known as Sarguneswarar, Kalyaneswarar and Idumbaneswarar. Goddess Mangalanayaki is worshipped as the consort.
The temple has a strong connection with the legendary Idumban. According to traditional belief, Idumban worshipped Lord Shiva here and attained salvation. The place is also associated with Idumbi, the sister of Idumban, who is traditionally said to have married Bhima.
The temple is also regarded as one of the places where Agastya Maharishi received the divine wedding darshan of Lord Shiva. It is traditionally regarded as a Pithru Mukthi Sthalam, associated with ancestral rites and spiritual liberation.
Idumbavanam is part of the ancient Chola-country temple landscape of the Cauvery delta. The temple's ancient names include Vilvavanam, Sargunesapuram, Mangalanaayakipuram and Manakkolanagar, reflecting the different sacred traditions associated with the site.
The Tamil Nadu HR&CE record describes the temple as an ancient shrine connected with the Chola tradition. The temple has undergone reconstruction and development during later historical periods.
The temple's importance is particularly preserved through the Thevaram hymn of Tirugnanasambandar. This devotional connection places Idumbavanam within the historic network of sacred Shiva temples celebrated by the Nayanmars.
