🔱 Temple Significance

Tirukkollikkadu Agneeswarar Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Tamil Shaivism and is identified as the 115th Paadal Petra Sthalam. The temple was praised by Saint Tirugnanasambandar in the Thevaram tradition.

The presiding deity is Agneeswarar, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Panjin Melladi Ammai. According to temple tradition, Agni worshipped Lord Shiva at this place, giving the temple its association with Agni and the name Agneeswarar.

The temple is particularly famous as a Pongu Sani Sthalam. The Tamil Nadu HR&CE description states that Sani Bhagavan performed penance here and worshipped Shiva, and is worshipped here as Pongu Sani.

A distinctive feature is the form of Sani Bhagavan holding a plough, traditionally interpreted as representing the dignity of labour. The temple is therefore especially visited by devotees performing worship associated with Sani Bhagavan and Saturn-related parihara traditions

🏛 Temple History

Tirukkollikkadu is an ancient Shaiva sacred centre in the Cauvery delta region. Its historical importance is particularly reflected in its inclusion among the Paadal Petra Sthalams and its association with the Thevaram hymns of Tirugnanasambandar.

The historical name of the place is Keeralathur. Over time, the sacred settlement became known as Tirukkollikkadu. The temple has preserved the traditional Shaiva worship associated with the region.

According to temple traditions, Agni worshipped Shiva here, while Sani Bhagavan also performed penance and worshipped Shiva. These traditions are closely connected with the temple's present identity as the Agneeswarar and Pongu Sani shrine.
