๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Tiruvaimur, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu
Vaimoornathar Temple at Tiruvaimur is an important Shaiva temple and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram. Appar and Tirugnanasambandar worshipped Lord Shiva here. The presiding deity is Vaimoornathar and the goddess is Paalinum Nanmozhi Ammai, also known as Ksheeropavachani.
The temple is also one of the Saptha Vidanga Sthalams, where Lord Thyagaraja is worshipped as Neela Vidangar. The associated sacred dance is Kamala Natanam, described as a lotus moving gently in the breeze.
The temple has strong roots in the early medieval Shaiva tradition because Tiruvaimur was praised by Appar and Tirugnanasambandar in the Tevaram. According to the traditional account, Shiva appeared in Appar's dream and instructed him to proceed to Tiruvaimur. Appar subsequently came to the temple, followed by Sambandar.
The present stone structure has Chola-period associations. Sources describe the earlier brick-and-mortar structure as having been reconstructed in stone during the reign of Vikrama Chola, with later inscriptions recording grants during the reigns of Rajadhiraja II, Kulottunga III and Rajaraja III.
Tiruvaimur is also part of the Saptha Vidanga tradition associated with the legend of King Muchukunda and the seven Thyagaraja images. The Thyagaraja image at Tiruvaimur is known as Neela Vidangar, associated with Kamala Natanam.
