๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Thiruppanaiyur Soundareswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tamil Saivaite Tevaram hymns. The presiding deity is Lord Soundareswarar, also known as Azhagiya Nathar and Thalavaneswarar. The temple is associated with Tirugnanasambandar and Sundarar and is the 73rd Shiva temple among the Paadal Petra Sthalams located on the southern bank of the River Cauvery. The sacred temple tree is the palmyra tree.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

According to the Tamil Nadu HR&CE temple history, worship at this site is associated with the ancient Tamil tradition of establishing shrines beneath sacred trees and within groves. A Shiva temple existed at Thiruppanaiyur by the 7th century, when Tirugnanasambandar and Appar visited and sang hymns here. The present stone structure was subsequently developed during the Chola period, with inscriptions referring to the place as Rajendra Chola Panaiyur. HR&CE places the major stone renovation/construction in the early 11th century. The temple is associated with Sage Parashara, Karikala Chola, Muchukunda Chakravartin and Mahalakshmi. The sacred tree is the palmyra tree, and the temple has sacred water bodies including Parashara Theertham and Mahalakshmi Theertham.
