๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Ramanathaswami Temple is an important Shaiva pilgrimage shrine in Tiruvarur district and is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. The temple was praised by the Nayanmar saint Tirugnanasambandar in the Thevaram tradition.

The temple is traditionally associated with Lord Rama. According to the temple tradition, Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here along with his worship at Rameswaram to seek relief from the sin associated with the killing of Ravana. Because of this association, the shrine became known as Ramanatheeswaram, and Shiva is worshipped here as Ramanathaswami.

Devotees traditionally visit this temple seeking spiritual purification and relief from sins. Its Paadal Petra Sthalam status and association with Rama make it an important stop for devotees travelling through the ancient temple region between Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple is situated at Thirukannapuram, a historically important sacred village in the Cauvery delta. The ancient name of the site is Ramanatheeswaram, reflecting its long-standing association with Rama and Shiva worship.

The temple's inclusion in the Thevaram tradition provides evidence of its importance within medieval Tamil Shaivism. Tirugnanasambandar praised the shrine, and it subsequently became part of the traditional list of 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams.

The present temple follows the Dravidian architectural tradition and contains inscriptions, reflecting the long history of temple development in the Tiruvarur region.
