Thirumarugal Rathnagireeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple associated with the Nayanmars and is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams. The presiding deity is Lord Rathnagireeswarar, also known as Manikkavannar, and the Goddess is Vanduvaar Kuzhali. The temple is particularly associated with relief from marriage obstacles and the reunion of separated couples. The temple's sacred tradition is connected with the miraculous revival of a merchant's son after a snake bite through the grace of Lord Shiva and the hymns of Saint Thirugnana Sambandar.

🏛 Temple History

The temple is traditionally associated with Kochengat Chola and is regarded as a Maadakkoyil. The temple has a five-tier Rajagopuram, two prakarams and a sacred temple tank in front of the entrance. Saint Thirugnana Sambandar and Saint Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) have sung hymns in praise of the Lord of Thirumarugal. The temple's sthala vriksham is the Marugal plantain tree, which is closely associated with the name and tradition of the sacred site.
