๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Seeyathamangai Ayavandeeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple in Nagapattinam district and one of the Devaram Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery southern bank. The temple is associated with Saint Thirugnana Sambandar, who sang hymns in praise of Lord Ayavandeeswarar. The sacred site is also regarded as a Devara Vaippu Sthalam.

Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Ayavandeeswarar, also known as Brahmapureeswarar, and the Goddess is Ir umalarkkannammai, also known as Ubaya Pushpa Vilochani. Brahma is traditionally associated with worship at this sacred place. The temple is also closely connected with Thiruneelakanta Nayanar and his wife Mangaiyarkkarasi, whose shrines are found within the temple.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The ancient name of Seeyathamangai is Thiruchathamangai. The temple stands on the northern bank of the Mudikondan River and faces west. Lord Shiva and Goddess Ir umalarkkannammai have separate shrine structures. The temple has a five-tiered gopuram for the Shiva shrine and a two-tiered gopuram for the Goddess shrine.

The temple contains shrines and sculptures associated with several important Shaiva traditions, including Vinayaka, Dandayudhapani, Ardhanarishvara, Dakshinamurti, Bhairava, Durga, Bhikshatana, Brahma, Lingodbhava, Agastya and other deities.

The temple is particularly significant because of its association with Thiruneelakanta Nayanar and his wife Mangaiyarkkarasi. Their images are installed within the temple premises.
