🛕 Lord Shiva | 📍 Thirunallar, Karaikal, Puducherry
One of the most revered Navagraha temples in South India, dedicated to Lord Saneeswarar (Saturn). It is one of the Saptha Vidanga Sthalas — seven ancient Shiva temples of the Karaikal region where the deity is a self-manifested (swayambhu) lingam. The presiding Shiva is Sri Dharbaranyeswarar and his consort is Sri Praneswari. Lord Saneeswarar here is believed to be under the direct command of Lord Shiva to bless devotees who visit sincerely. Famous for the legend of King Nala, who was freed from the affliction of Saturn by worshipping here. The sacred Nala Theertham tank is where King Nala bathed and recovered his lost kingdom. Praised in the Thevaram by all three Nayanmars — Thirugnana Sambandhar, Appar, and Sundarar.
Thirunallar, originally called Dharbaranyam (meaning a forest of darbha grass), is one of the ancient Shaiva kshetras of the Karaikal region under the Puducherry UT administration. The place later came to be known as Nagavidangapuram before acquiring the present name Thirunallar — derived from "Nalan + Aar" (the one who redeemed King Nala). The temple complex houses two principal sanctums: the Sri Dharbaranyeswarar Shiva temple and the Sri Saneeswarar Baghawan shrine. Lord Shiva emerged as a swayambhu (self-manifested) lingam from the forest of darbha grass and hence bears the darbha grass marks on his form. The temple belongs to the Saptha Vidanga Sthalas — the seven sacred Shiva abodes of the region. It is glorified in the Thevaram (Tevaram) by Thirugnana Sambandhar, Appar, and Sundarar. The Pachilapathigam (the "green decade") composed by Sambandhar at this temple is particularly famous — these verses, written on palm leaves, miraculously did not burn during the fire ordeal against Jain scholars. The puranic story of King Nala and Damayanti is deeply linked with this temple. After losing everything to fate influenced by Saturn, Nala came here, worshipped Lord Dharbaranyeswarar and surrendered to Saneeswarar, upon which Saturn relented and Nala regained his kingdom and prosperity. The tank in which Nala bathed is still venerated as Nala Theertham. The temple is administered by the Department of Hindu Religious Institutions, Government of Puducherry.
Worshipping Lord Saneeswarar at Thirunallar is considered the most powerful remedy for those undergoing Sani Dasha, Sade Sati (7.5 years of Saturn), Ashtama Sani, and Janma Sani. Bathing in Nala Theertham and offering sesame oil lamps is believed to significantly reduce Saturn's malefic effects.
Based on the legend of King Nala who lost his entire kingdom, wealth, and wife due to Saturn's influence and regained everything after worshipping here, devotees believe sincere prayers at this temple restore financial stability, career growth, and lost opportunities.
Devotees experiencing long delays in marriage, job promotions, business growth, or property matters due to planetary positions visit Thirunallar specifically to seek Saneeswarar's grace. Regular Saturday visits combined with sesame oil abhishekam are believed to clear such blockages.
As one of the Saptha Vidanga Sthalas where Lord Shiva is self-manifested (swayambhu), Thirunallar carries immense spiritual power for liberation. The Pachilapathigam verses of Thirugnana Sambandhar sung here are believed to cleanse accumulated karma and lead the soul toward moksha.
The Nala Theertham sacred tank is believed to have healing properties. Bathing in its waters before temple entry is a centuries-old practice. Devotees with chronic illnesses, especially those attributed to Saturn's position in their horoscope, seek relief through regular worship and the Purattasi Pournami special abhishekam.
Lord Saneeswarar at Thirunallar, acting under Lord Shiva's command, is believed to protect sincere devotees from enemies, evil eye, and negative planetary influences. Offering black sesame seeds, lighting ellu vilakku, and reciting the Sani mantra at this temple is a prescribed remedy across all Jyotish traditions.
