๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Dharumapuram, Karaikal, Puducherry
Dharumapuram Yazhmoorinathar Temple is a historic Shiva temple associated with the Tevaram hymns and the Nayanmar tradition. The temple is traditionally regarded as the 51st Shiva Sthalam among the temples located on the southern bank of the River Cauvery. The presiding deity is worshipped as Yazhmoorinathar, a name associated with the sacred legend of breaking the musical instrument Yazh.
The temple is particularly associated with Saint Thirugnana Sambandar, who praised the shrine in his Tevaram hymns. The temple's history also has a connection with Yama and his worship of Lord Shiva.
According to the traditional Sthala Purana, the temple is associated with the worship of Lord Shiva by Yama, the deity responsible for maintaining the order of life and death. After an incident connected with Markandeya at Thirukkadaiyur, Yama is said to have incurred a divine consequence and subsequently worshipped Lord Shiva at several sacred places.
At Dharumapuram, Lord Shiva appeared before Yama and assured him that his affliction would be removed at the appropriate time. In gratitude, Yama is traditionally believed to have created a sacred tank known as Yama Theertham. Since Yama represents Dharma and is believed to have received the Lord's blessing here, the place came to be known as Dharumapuram.
The temple is also connected with the legend of the Yazh. The presiding deity is therefore known as Yazhmoorinathar. The shrine is traditionally associated with Thirugnana Sambandar and the Tevaram tradition.
