🛕 Lord Shiva | 📍 Thiruppugalur, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu
Sri Agnipureeswarar Temple at Thiruppugalur is an ancient Shiva temple and a Tevaram Paadal Petra Sthalam. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Agnipureeswarar, while the Goddess is Karundhar Kuzhali Ammai. The temple is closely associated with the Nayanmars, particularly Appar and Sundarar, and is an important centre of Tamil Shaiva heritage.
The temple is traditionally associated with Agni, the god of fire, who is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here. Because of this association, Shiva came to be known as Agnipureeswarar. The temple also has an important place in the history of the Nayanmars. Appar is traditionally associated with this sacred place, and the temple is remembered as one of the significant Shaiva pilgrimage centres of the Cauvery region.
The temple complex preserves the architectural and religious traditions of the Chola region and contains inscriptions that reflect the historical patronage of the temple. Thiruppugalur is also associated with the life of Muruga Nayanar, one of the celebrated Nayanmars.
