Thirukondeeswaram Pasupatheeswarar Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the sacred Shiva temples praised in the Thevaram hymns of the Nayanmar saints. Saint Tirunavukkarasar (Appar) has sung about this sacred shrine in his Thevaram, giving the temple an important place in Tamil Shaiva devotional tradition.

Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Pasupatheeswarar, while Goddess Parvati is known as Shanthanayaki. The temple is also traditionally regarded as having a suyambu form of Shiva.

🏛 Temple History

Thirukondeeswaram is part of the historic Shaiva temple landscape of the Cauvery delta. Its greatest historical and devotional importance comes from its inclusion among the Paadal Petra Sthalams and its mention in the Thevaram of Tirunavukkarasar.

The temple stands on the southern bank of the Mudikondan River and is situated close to Nannilam. Historical pilgrimage sources place the temple about 2.4–2.5 km from Nannilam, making Nannilam an important gateway for visitors.

The temple continues to follow traditional Shaiva worship, with regular poojas and special observances during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham, Navaratri, Thiruvathirai and Thirukarthigai.
