🛕 Lord Shiva | 📍 Thirumakalam, Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu
Thirumakalam Mahakalanathar Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Tamil Shaivism. Saint Thirugnana Sambandar praised Lord Shiva here through the Thevaram tradition. The presiding deity is worshipped as Mahakalanathar, while Goddess Parvati is known as Bhayakshambikai.
The temple is traditionally associated with Mahakala worship and is considered a sacred place for devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. Its Paadal Petra status gives it an important place in the Shaiva pilgrimage tradition of the Cauvery delta.
Thirumakalam is part of the ancient Cauvery delta Shaiva temple region of Tamil Nadu. The temple's historical importance is particularly preserved through its inclusion among the Paadal Petra Sthalams and its mention in the Thevaram hymns of Thirugnana Sambandar.
The shrine has continued to preserve traditional Shaiva worship over the centuries and remains one of the historic Shiva temples in the Tiruvarur region.
