Amirthakaleswarar Temple at Sakkottai is a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised by Sundarar in the Thevaram. The presiding deity is Amirthakalasnathar, with Goddess Amirthavalli. It is also one of the seven temples associated with the Kumbakonam Sapthasthanam festival.

🏛 Temple History

The temple is traditionally known as Tirukkalayanallur. According to the sthala purana, the pot containing the essence of creation rested here during the deluge, giving the place its ancient name Kalayanallur. The present masonry structure dates to the Chola period, with later additions associated with the Thanjavur Nayaks.
