Padikasu Nathar Temple, also known as Swarnapureeswarar Temple, is a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised in the Thevaram hymns by Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Padikasu Nathar and Goddess Soundaranayagi as the consort. The temple is associated with Pugazhthunai Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars, who was born at Azhagaputhur.

🏛 Temple History

The temple has Chola-period origins and is mentioned as a Maadakoil associated with Kochengat Chola. Inscriptions record donations during the reigns of Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I. The present masonry structure was developed during the Chola period, with later additions attributed to the Thanjavur Nayaks.
