๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
Kasi Viswanathar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple in Kumbakonam, also known as Kudanthai Karonam. It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised by Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar. The temple is especially famous for its shrine of the Nava Kannigas, representing nine sacred rivers, and its close association with the Mahamaham Tank.
The temple has an ancient Shaivite tradition dating back to the Tevaram period. According to local tradition, Rama and Lakshmana worshipped Shiva here during their search for Sita. Another legend connects the temple with the nine sacred rivers, who worshipped Shiva here after seeking relief from the sins washed away by pilgrims at Kasi. The present masonry structure includes substantial Nayak-period work from the 16th century.
