๐Ÿ› Temple History

The temple has an ancient Shaiva tradition and is identified by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department as the 82nd Shiva temple among the 127 sacred Shiva temples on the southern bank of the Cauvery. The sacred site is traditionally known as Thirunagaikaronam. According to the sthala tradition, Pundarika Muni worshipped Lord Shiva here, and Shiva accepted the sage along with his physical body; this is associated with the name Kayarohana, referring to the Lord's taking the devotee's body into Himself. The temple is also associated with Adhipaththa Nayanar and the worship of several sages and deities.
