🔱 Temple Significance

Arulmigu Devapuriswarar Temple at Thevur is an ancient Shiva shrine in the Cauvery delta region. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Devapuriswarar, also traditionally known as Devagurunathar. The temple is associated with the worship of Indra and is known for its traditional Shaiva heritage. A notable feature of the temple is the stone banana tree, traditionally regarded as an ancient and unusual sacred feature.

🏛 Temple History

According to local temple tradition, Indra worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred place to overcome the sin associated with the killing of Virudhasura. Because the Devas are traditionally associated with worship at this shrine, Lord Shiva came to be known as Devapuriswarar. The temple has several interesting traditional features, including a stone banana tree known as Kal Vazhai. The shrine also preserves the characteristic religious traditions of historic Shiva temples of the Cauvery delta.
