Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in India and one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Ramanathaswamy, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Parvathavardhini. The temple is also a Paadal Petra Sthalam and is traditionally associated with Lord Rama's worship of Shiva after the Lanka war. 🏛 Temple History

The temple has a long history of development under several rulers and dynasties. The present structure was developed over centuries, with major contributions from the Pandya, Jaffna and Sethupathi rulers. The Ramanathaswamy shrine is traditionally connected with the Ramayana, while the temple's extensive corridors and stone architecture represent the development of South Indian temple architecture over many centuries.

🧭 Pilgrim Travel Tips

Start early if you want to complete the 22-theertham ritual and main darshan comfortably.
The traditional pilgrimage sequence usually includes bathing in the sea at Agni Theertham followed by the 22 sacred wells inside the temple.
The 22 theerthams have individual traditional names and religious significance.
Bring a change of clothes if you plan to participate in the theertham ritual.
After the theertham bath, change into dry, modest clothing before proceeding for darshan.
Visit the main Ramanathaswamy shrine and Parvathavardhini Amman shrine.
Do not miss the temple's spectacular long corridors and hundreds of stone pillars.
The temple has two Lingams traditionally associated with the Ramayana legend — one said to have been made by Sita from sand, and another brought by Hanuman.
The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, making it an especially important destination for Shaiva pilgrims.
It is also a Paadal Petra Sthalam, connecting the temple with the Tamil Tevaram tradition.
Masi Shivaratri and Mahashivaratri are important festival periods.
Thai Poosam, Thirukarthikai, Navaratri and Rama-related festivals are also observed.
Aadi Thirukalyanam is an important annual festival associated with the divine marriage of Ramanathaswamy and Parvathavardhini.
Visit Agni Theertham, located near the eastern side of the temple, as part of the traditional pilgrimage.
Rameswaram has several other sacred places associated with the Ramayana, so allow at least one full day for a detailed pilgrimage.
Important nearby pilgrimage places include Dhanushkodi, Kothandaramaswamy Temple, Gandhamadhana Parvatham and Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple.
During major festivals and weekends, expect large crowds and longer waiting times.
Senior citizens should consider using available queue/darshan facilities and avoid the hottest part of the day.
Carry drinking water and basic essentials; Rameswaram can be hot and humid.
Footwear must be left in the designated area before entering the temple.
Follow temple instructions carefully during theertham rituals, especially regarding wet clothes and movement between the wells.
