🔱 Temple Significance

Aksheeswaraswamy Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Acharapakkam. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Aksheeswaraswamy / Aatcheeswarar, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Ilamkili Nayaki. The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised in the 7th-century Tevaram tradition by the Nayanmar saints. It is also notable for its association with the Tripurasamharam legend, in which Shiva destroyed the three demon cities.

🏛 Temple History

The temple has important historical connections with the Chola period. Inscriptions from the reign of Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120 CE) refer to Shiva here as Accukkontu Aruliya Tevar and record donations of land, gold and sheep to the temple. The temple complex covers about 1.21 acres and has a five-tier Rajagopuram.

Begin with darshan of Aksheeswaraswamy/Aatcheeswarar and Ilamkili Nayaki.
This is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, so devotees interested in Tevaram should give sufficient time for darshan.
The temple is one of the important Shiva temples of the traditional Thondai Nadu region.
The famous Tripurasamharam legend is closely associated with this temple.
According to the legend, Shiva's chariot axle broke because he initially departed without worshipping Vinayaga.
The temple therefore has an important traditional connection with Vinayaga worship.
Observe the five-tier Rajagopuram and the temple tank in front of the entrance.
The temple has two important sanctum traditions and several subsidiary shrines.
