Thirucherai Senneriyappar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Senneriyappar, also known as Saraparameswarar, and Goddess Parvati as Gnanavalli/Gnanambikai. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and is the 95th Shiva shrine on the southern bank of the Cauvery in the Chola Nadu region. The temple is traditionally associated with the Chola period. Historical and temple traditions identify Thirucherai as an important Shaiva centre, worshipped by sages including Markandeya and Dhaumya. The temple contains inscriptions recording earlier consecration works, including references to renovations in 1992 and 2004. The temple complex includes a Rajagopuram, additional gopuram, flagstaff, Balipeetha and several subsidiary shrines.

Begin with darshan of Senneriyappar / Saraparameswarar and Gnanavalli Amman.
This is an important Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised by both Sambandar and Appar.
The temple is the 95th southern-bank Cauvery Shiva shrine in the traditional Chola Nadu listing.
Do not miss the separate Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar shrine.
Traditional worship of Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar is associated with prayers for relief from debt-related difficulties. These are religious beliefs, not guaranteed financial outcomes.
Monday worship is traditionally considered especially important for Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar.
The temple's Mavilangai tree is the sacred temple tree.
Markandeya Theertham is the principal sacred water source associated with the temple.
Markandeya and Dhaumya Maharishi are traditionally said to have worshipped here.
During Masi 13, 14 and 15, sunlight is traditionally said to fall directly on Senneriyappar; special Surya Puja is performed during this period.
Observe the Rajagopuram, smaller gopuram, flagstaff and Balipeetha before entering the inner prakaram.

Thirucherai is especially convenient for a combined pilgrimage because the nearby Saranathan Perumal Temple, a Divya Desam, is also located here.
