🔱 Temple Significance

Sakthivanesvara Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Thirusakthimutram near Patteeswaram. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Sakthivanesvara, also known as Sivakozhundeesvara and Thazhuvakuzhaintha Nathar. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, praised by Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar. It stands on the banks of the Kudamurutti River, a tributary of the Cauvery. The temple is particularly famous for the form of Shiva's Lingam being embraced by Goddess Parvati.

🏛 Temple History

The temple has an ancient Shaivite tradition and is associated with the Chola temple heritage of the Kumbakonam–Thanjavur region. Traditional accounts connect the shrine with the worship and penance of Goddess Parvati. The temple's historical identity is closely connected with the name Sakthimutram, meaning the place where Sakthi embraced Shiva.
