๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Aavoor, Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu
Aavoor Pasupatheeswarar Temple is an important ancient Shiva temple of the Cauvery Delta and is counted among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. The temple is associated with the Tevaram tradition and is praised by Tirugnanasambandar.
The principal deity is Pasupatheeswarar, a name meaning the Lord of all beings and traditionally associated with cows. The temple's central legend tells of Kamadhenu, the divine cow, who was cursed by Sage Vasishtha. Following Brahma's advice, Kamadhenu is believed to have performed penance here and worshipped Shiva by bathing the Lingam with her milk. Shiva granted her relief from the curse, giving the shrine its strong association with Kamadhenu and cow worship.
The temple is also notable for its five Bhairava images, traditionally known as Panchabairava. This is one of the distinctive religious features of Aavoor Pasupatheeswaram.
The temple is traditionally counted among the Maadakoils of Kochengat Chola. Its elevated sanctum is part of this architectural tradition, in which the main shrine is raised above ground level.
Aavoor has an ancient connection with the Chola period. The temple is traditionally associated with Kochengat Chola, one of the 63 Nayanmars, who is believed to have built 70 Maadakoils. Aavoor Pasupatheeswaram is traditionally counted among these elevated temples.
The present masonry structure is associated with the Chola period, with later additions attributed to the Thanjavur Nayaks. Inscriptions found at the temple indicate royal and local patronage over different periods. One inscription, dated to the reign of Rajendra Chola III, records a land grant to the temple.
The temple has therefore preserved several layers of Tamil Shaiva historyโfrom the Nayanmar devotional tradition and Chola architecture to later medieval developments.
