๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Vazhuvur, Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu
Vazhuvur Veerattaneshwarar Temple is one of the Ashta Veerattana Sthalams, the eight sacred temples associated with the heroic deeds of Lord Shiva. The temple is particularly famous for Gajasamharamurti, the fierce form of Shiva who is traditionally believed to have defeated the demon Gajasura in the form of an elephant. The temple is also recognised as a Tevaram Vaippu Sthalam.
The temple is traditionally associated with the Gajasamhara episode. According to the temple tradition, Gajasura, who had assumed the form of an elephant, troubled the gods and sages. Lord Shiva fought Gajasura, tore open the elephant's body and wore its hide. The temple's Gajasamharamurti is therefore one of its most important sacred and artistic features.
The temple has a large Dravidian-style complex with a prominent gopuram, temple tank and several architectural features. The Gajasamharamurti is displayed in the Gnan Sabha. The temple also has inscriptions referring to the village as Vazhuvur and recording grants and activities during the Chola period, including references from the reigns of Rajaraja II and Kulothunga III.
