🔱 Temple Significance

Mayuranathaswami Temple is an ancient Shiva temple located in Mayiladuthurai on the banks of the Cauvery River. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mayuranathaswami, and Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Abhayambikai. The temple is an important Saiva pilgrimage centre and is associated with the sacred traditions of the Mayiladuthurai region.

🏛 Temple History

According to the traditional sthala history, Goddess Parvati is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a peahen at this sacred place. Because of this association with the peacock, the place came to be known as Mayuram and the presiding deity as Mayuranathaswami. The temple has a long association with the Saiva devotional tradition and the sacred geography of the Cauvery delta. The temple complex represents the traditional Dravidian temple style and contains several shrines and sacred features associated with Shaivite worship.
