Thiruvisanallur Sivayoginathar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Sivayoginathar and Goddess Parvati as Soundaranayagi. The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, revered in the Tevaram hymns of Appar, Thirugnanasambandar and Sundarar. It is one of the important Shiva temples on the northern bank of the Cauvery. The temple is also particularly known for its four forms of Bhairava and its traditional association with Shiva Yogis attaining salvation.

🏛 Temple History

The temple has strong Medieval Chola connections. The oldest portions of the present masonry structure date to the 9th century, while later additions were made under the Cholas, Thanjavur Nayaks and Thanjavur Marathas. The temple has around 97 inscriptions, including records from the periods of Parantaka I, Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola II. The five-tier Rajagopuram and three-prakara complex display important features of Chola architecture.

This is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, so devotees interested in Tevaram should give sufficient time for darshan.

The temple is traditionally associated with eight Shiva Yogis attaining salvation and merging with the Lingam.
