๐Ÿ”ฑ Temple Significance

Prananadeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Thirumangalakudi in Thanjavur district. Shiva is worshipped as Prananadeswarar/Prananatheswarar, and Goddess Parvati as Mangalambigai. The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised in the Tevaram hymns by Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar. It is traditionally associated with protection of Mangalyam and is closely connected with the nearby Suryanar Kovil.

๐Ÿ› Temple History

The present masonry structure has its earliest portions from the 9th-century Chola period, with later additions extending through the Thanjavur Nayak period. Inscriptions record contributions from Cholas, Pallavas, Vijayanagara rulers and later patrons. The temple was also referred to as Kulothunga Choleswaram in inscriptions.
