🔱 Temple Significance

Thirukolakka is an important Shaivite pilgrimage centre and one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery northern bank. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Sapthapureeswarar, while the Goddess is known as Osai Kodutha Nayaki. According to temple tradition, Lord Shiva blessed Saint Tirugnanasambandar with golden cymbals at this sacred place. The temple is also associated with music and the power of sacred sound.

🏛 Temple History

The historical name of Thirukolakka is Sapthapuri. The temple belongs to the ancient Chola-period sacred landscape of the Cauvery region. It is traditionally counted as the 15th Paadal Petra Sthalam among the temples on the northern bank of the Cauvery. The shrine has separate sanctums for Sapthapureeswarar and Osai Kodutha Nayaki, along with several subsidiary shrines.
