Pushpavananathar Temple at Tiruppoonturutti is an ancient Shiva temple near Tiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district. Shiva is worshipped as Pushpavananathar, while Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Soundaranayagi / Azhagalamarndha Nayaki.

The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram. It is particularly associated with Tirunavukkarasar (Appar), who is traditionally believed to have stayed here, established a mutt and performed uzhavarappani—temple cleaning and service.

The temple is also famous for the traditional story that when Tirugnana Sambandar came to worship Shiva, Nandi moved slightly aside so that Sambandar could have a clear view of the sanctum.

It is one of the Thiruvaiyaru Sapthasthana temples.

🏛 Temple History

Pushpavananathar Temple is an ancient Shaiva temple with strong Chola-period associations. The oldest portions of the present masonry structure are attributed to the 9th-century Chola period, while subsequent additions were made during later Chola, Vijayanagara/Nayak and Maratha periods. Inscriptions associated with the temple record contributions from Cholas, Thanjavur Nayaks and the Thanjavur Maratha rulers. The temple is closely connected with the life and devotional service of Tirunavukkarasar (Appar). Tradition states that Appar established a mutt near the temple and performed extensive temple-cleaning service. The temple's name is associated with the traditional legend of Indra worshipping Shiva with flowers. The place became known as Pushpavanam, and Shiva as Pushpavananathar. The word thuruthi traditionally refers to a place situated between two rivers; Tiruppoonturutti lies between the Cauvery and Kudamurutti waterways. Architecturally, the temple follows the Dravidian style and has a five-tier Rajagopuram, three precincts and numerous sculptures and subsidiary shrines.
