🔱 Temple Significance

Pasupatiswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Pandanallur in Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk, Thanjavur district. Shiva is worshipped as Pasupatheeswarar and Goddess Parvati as Mangalambika. The temple is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised in the Tevaram by Saint Thirugnana Sambandar. It is also associated with the traditional legend of Kamadhenu worshipping Shiva.

🏛 Temple History

The present masonry structure has major Chola-period origins, with the oldest portions dating to the 11th century. Numerous inscriptions from Chola rulers including Rajaraja I, Vikrama Chola, Rajadhiraja II, Kulothunga III and Rajaraja III record donations and other contributions. Later additions and donations are also associated with the Vijayanagara period.
