🔱 Temple Significance

Kodeeswarar Temple is an ancient Shiva temple at Kottaiyur, near Kumbakonam. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kodeeswarar and Goddess Parvathi as Pandhadu Nayaki. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and was praised by Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) in the Thevaram. It is also one of the Kumbakonam Sapta Stana temples and is associated with the Mahamaham tradition.

🏛 Temple History

According to the traditional legend, Sage Herandar (Athreya) worshipped Shiva here. Shiva is believed to have manifested in countless forms of Vinayaga, Parvathi and Muruga, leading to the name Kodeeswarar. The temple has a five-tiered Rajagopuram and its present structure reflects the long-standing Shaivite architectural tradition of the Kaveri region.
