๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Kanchipuram, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu
Ekambareswarar Temple is one of the most important Shiva temples in Kanchipuram and one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing the Prithvi (Earth) element. Shiva is worshipped as Ekambareswarar and is associated with Goddess Elavarkuzhali / Kamakshi tradition. The temple is also a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised by the Nayanmars. The temple is famous for its enormous 11-tier Rajagopuram, extensive corridors and the sacred mango tree traditionally believed to be thousands of years old.
The temple has a long history and has been expanded by several South Indian dynasties, including the Pallavas, Cholas and Vijayanagara rulers. According to the traditional legend, Goddess Parvati worshipped Shiva under a mango tree by making a Lingam from sand. Shiva tested her devotion by causing the nearby river to flood, and Parvati protected the sand Lingam by embracing it. This tradition is associated with the temple's Earth-element significance.
