🛕 Lord Shiva | 📍 Tirur, Malappuram, Kerala
Trikandiyur Shiva Temple, also known as Thrikkandiyur Mahadeva Temple, is an ancient Shiva shrine at Tirur in Malappuram district, Kerala. It is traditionally regarded as one of the 108 Sivalayams associated with Lord Parashurama, and the Shiva Lingam is believed to have been consecrated by Parashurama.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, whose sanctum faces east. A large temple pond lies directly in front of the temple and is one of the notable features of the sacred complex. The temple also has several subsidiary shrines, including those associated with Vishnu, Ganapathy, Ayyappa, Parashurama and other deities.
The temple is particularly known for Shakti Pooja during Mandala Kalam, traditionally observed for 41 days during November–December. The temple also celebrates its annual Vaavulsavam and other Shiva-related observances. The temple's traditional Kerala architecture and large pond add to its cultural and pilgrimage significance.
The traditional history of Trikandiyur Shiva Temple is closely connected with Parashurama, who is revered in Kerala tradition as the figure who reclaimed the land from the sea. The temple is believed to be one of the 108 Sivalayams associated with Parashurama, and local tradition attributes the installation of the Shiva Lingam to him.
Kerala Tourism records a traditional historical account that associates the construction of the temple with Cheraman Perumal in 823 CE. The temple was subsequently managed by different traditional and royal institutions, including the Mussath families, Alathiyoor Namboothiri Sabha and the Vettathu royal family. It later came under the patronage of the Samoothiri.
The temple suffered damage during the period associated with Tipu Sultan's campaigns and was subsequently rebuilt with the support of local patrons. The present temple therefore represents both an ancient religious tradition and a history of rebuilding and preservation.
One of the temple's most distinctive physical features is its large pond. Local tradition connects the pond with a legend concerning the intense energy of Lord Shiva's third eye and the need to cool or pacify it. The temple pond is traditionally said to correspond closely in size to the temple complex.
