๐ Lord Murugan | ๐ Peralassery, Kannur, Kerala
Sree Peralassery Temple is a famous Subramanya temple in Kannur district of Kerala, traditionally associated with Lord Subramanya in a serpent form. The temple is particularly renowned for its ancient Naga worship traditions, sacred serpent idols and distinctive offerings made to the deity.
According to local temple tradition, Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Hanuman stopped at this place while travelling towards Lanka in search of Sita. Lord Rama is believed to have decided to consecrate Lord Subramanya here. When Hanuman, who had been sent to bring a suitable idol, could not return at the required time, Lord Rama is said to have removed his Peruvala, a royal bangle or armlet, and consecrated it at the site. The place subsequently came to be known as Peruvalassery and later Peralassery.
The temple has a particularly strong connection with serpent worship. A sacred serpent grove and snake pit beneath an Ashoka tree are associated with Naga Aradhana. Devotees offer items including eggs, milk and other traditional offerings as part of serpent worship.
Another major attraction is the temple's magnificent stepped pond, with numerous steps descending into the water from its sides. The pond is one of the most distinctive architectural features of the temple complex and is regarded as sacred by devotees.
The annual Kodiyettam festival, traditional temple arts and special worship days make Sree Peralassery Temple an important spiritual and cultural destination in North Malabar.
Sree Peralassery Temple has a long-standing place in the religious traditions of Kannur and North Malabar. Local temple tradition traces the origin of the shrine to the Treta Yuga and connects it with the Ramayana story of Lord Rama's journey towards Lanka.
According to the traditional account, Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Hanuman stopped at Peralassery during their search for Sita. Lord Rama decided to consecrate Lord Subramanya at the location. Hanuman was sent north to obtain a suitable idol, but he could not return before the auspicious time for the consecration.
Lord Rama is traditionally believed to have removed his royal Peruvala and consecrated it instead. When Hanuman later returned and attempted to replace it with the idol he had brought, a serpent is said to have appeared and prevented him from disturbing the consecration. This legend is closely connected with the temple's later association with Lord Subramanya in serpent form and Naga worship.
Over generations, Peralassery developed into an important pilgrimage centre in North Malabar. The temple became particularly known for serpent worship, the sacred serpent grove and traditional offerings including hen's eggs.
The large stepped temple pond is another important part of the temple's heritage. Kerala Tourism highlights the pond's unusual architecture, with numerous steps leading into the water from all four sides.
The temple continues to conduct its annual festival during the Malayalam month of Dhanu, with traditional art forms such as Thayambaka, Chakyarkoothu, Ottan Thullal and Kathakali associated with the festival season.
