๐ Lord Shiva | ๐ Karuveli, Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu
Sarguneswarar Temple at Karuveli is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Tamil Shaivism. Saint Thirunavukkarasar (Appar) praised the temple in his Thevaram hymns. Wikipedia records the temple as a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and notes the traditional belief that worship here leads devotees towards salvation and freedom from rebirth.
The presiding deity is Sarguneswarar, a form of Shiva associated with completeness and auspicious qualities. Goddess Sarvanga Nayaki, also known as Sarvanga Sundari, is the consort. Her idol is traditionally described as approximately 5.5 feet tall.
One of the most important features of the temple is Yama Theertham, the temple tank located in front of the shrine. According to the temple tradition, Yama, the deity associated with death, worshipped Lord Shiva here after taking a sacred bath in this tank. Because of this legend, devotees traditionally associate the shrine with overcoming the fear of death.
The temple is also associated with the traditional belief that Shiva performed the Kodukotti dance here. The temple's own historical account connects the place with the worship of Indra, Yama and other divine beings.
Karuveli is an ancient sacred village on the banks of the Arasalar, a branch of the Cauvery. The temple's historical name is Thirukaruvili Kottittai. Its own historical account states that the temple has a history extending back more than a thousand years, while other temple references describe the shrine as approximately 500โ1000 years old.
The temple is closely connected with the Chola-period religious and architectural tradition of the Cauvery delta. The temple's own history states that the shrine was reconstructed and renovated during the period associated with Rajendra Chola.
The temple's devotional importance is particularly preserved through the Thevaram hymn of Thirunavukkarasar. In the traditional Shaiva pilgrimage system, this places Karuveli among the important Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Cauvery region.
A major modern restoration was undertaken during the 1990s by V. Krishnamurthy and V. Vaidyanathan, natives of Karuveli. A Kumbabhishekam was conducted in 1997, and another Maha Kumbabhishekam took place in 2017.
