The original temple complex is traditionally believed to have been built during the Chola period, while the present masonry structures developed under later ruling dynasties. A three-tiered gopuram provides the main entrance.
The temple is associated with the Pandyan ruler Adiveerarama Pandian, who is traditionally said to have been born under the Thiruvathirai star and to have been a devotee of the deity.
