Jal Mahal was originally constructed around 1699 by Sawai Jai Singh of Amber as a duck-hunting lodge rather than a royal residence. The palace and the surrounding lake were subsequently renovated and enlarged in the 18th century. Rajasthan Tourism also describes the structure as having been associated with royal duck-hunting activities.
