Hawa Mahal was completed in 1799 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. It was designed by architect Lal Chand Ustad.
The palace was reportedly inspired by the distinctive structure of Khetri Mahal. Its design was influenced by the traditional architectural character of Jaipur and the royal requirement for women of the court to observe activities taking place on the streets below while maintaining privacy.
