🔱 Temple Significance

Arattupuzha Sree Sastha Temple is an ancient temple in Thrissur district of Kerala dedicated to Lord Sastha, worshipped here as Lord Ayyappa. The temple is traditionally believed to be more than 3,000 years old and is an important centre of Kerala's temple traditions and cultural heritage.

The temple is especially famous as the main venue of Arattupuzha Pooram, one of Kerala's oldest major temple festivals. The festival is popularly known as the “Mother of all Poorams” and is celebrated as a grand gathering of deities from neighbouring temples. Kerala Tourism describes the festival as a seven-day celebration featuring processions, decorated elephants and traditional percussion performances.

A distinctive tradition of Arattupuzha Pooram is the Devamela, or divine gathering, in which deities from several surrounding temples are ceremonially brought to Arattupuzha. The festival includes spectacular elephant processions and traditional Kerala percussion such as Panchavadyam, Pacharimelam and Pandimelam.

The temple also has an important connection with Triprayar Sree Rama Temple. The Triprayar deity, known as Triprayar Thevar, is one of the important participating deities in the Arattupuzha Pooram traditions.

Another major attraction is Sasthavinte Melam, a grand percussion performance associated with the festival. The Pooram concludes with the Arattu, a ceremonial sacred bath of the deities, symbolising purification and renewal.

Arattupuzha therefore represents more than a single temple visit. It is a living centre of Sastha worship, traditional Kerala temple architecture, ritual arts, percussion, elephant pageantry and the historic Pooram festival tradition.

🏛 Temple History

Arattupuzha Sree Sastha Temple is traditionally believed to have a history extending over 3,000 years. Kerala Tourism identifies the temple as the focal point of the historic Arattupuzha Pooram and notes its traditional Kerala architectural character. The temple became the centre of a large ritual gathering in which deities from surrounding temples assembled for the annual Pooram.

The historical importance of Arattupuzha Pooram is also connected with the later development of Thrissur Pooram. Kerala Tourism records that when heavy rains prevented several Thrissur temples from reaching Arattupuzha Pooram, tensions over participation contributed to the circumstances that eventually led to the creation of Thrissur Pooram under Sakthan Thampuran.
