🔱 Temple Significance

Thirukollampudur is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, with the temple praised in the Thevaram hymns of Saint Thirugnanasambandar. It is traditionally counted as the 230th Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 113th Shiva shrine on the southern bank of the Cauvery in Chola Nadu.

The temple is also one of the Pancha Aranya Sthalams. The name Aranyam means forest, and this temple represents Vilva Vanam, the sacred forest of Vilva trees. The Vilva tree is the sthala vriksham and has a strong association with Shiva worship.

The presiding deity is worshipped as Vilvaranyeswarar, while the Goddess is Soundara Nayaki. Shiva is traditionally regarded as a Swayambumurthi at this temple

🏛 Temple History

The temple has a history extending back many centuries and belongs to the ancient Shaiva tradition of the Cauvery delta. During the Thevaram period, the place was known as Kollamputhur and later as Thirukkalambur / Thirukollampudur.

Epigraphical evidence indicates that the temple was constructed or substantially developed during the Chola period, with sources associating its construction with Kulothunga Chola III or Rajaraja Chola III.

The temple has several sacred associations. Traditional accounts state that many sages and divine beings worshipped Lord Shiva here. The temple's sacred water bodies include Brahma Theertham, Agni Theertham and Ganga Theertham, along with the nearby Mulliyar/Vettaru river.
