🛕 Lord Brahma | 📍 Pushkar, Ajmer, Rajasthan
Brahma Temple in Pushkar is one of the most important pilgrimage temples associated with Lord Brahma, the Hindu deity traditionally regarded as the creator of the universe. Located close to the sacred Pushkar Lake, the temple occupies a special place in Hindu pilgrimage traditions.
The shrine is particularly notable because temples dedicated to Brahma are uncommon. The main sanctum houses a four-faced representation of Lord Brahma, symbolising his association with the four directions. Goddess Gayatri is also worshipped within the temple.
The temple's red shikhara, marble construction, silver-decorated interiors and swan motifs associated with Brahma make it one of the distinctive religious landmarks of Pushkar. Pilgrims traditionally combine a visit to the Brahma Temple with a visit to Pushkar Lake and its sacred ghats.
The history of Brahma Temple at Pushkar is closely connected with the religious traditions surrounding Pushkar Lake. According to Hindu tradition, Lord Brahma selected Pushkar as a sacred place for performing a yajna. The religious importance of the town subsequently became closely associated with Brahma worship.
Rajasthan Tourism describes the temple as having very ancient origins, while noting that the existing structure dates to around the 14th century. The temple has undergone renovation and modification over different periods. Adi Shankara is traditionally associated with an earlier phase of renovation, while the present structure is also associated with later restoration.
The temple is built primarily with marble and stone and is recognisable by its red shikhara and swan motif. Inside, the sanctum contains the four-faced image of Lord Brahma along with the worship of Gayatri. Silver coins are incorporated into parts of the temple's decorative surfaces as offerings made by devotees.
The temple's religious importance becomes particularly visible during the Kartik Purnima period, when Pushkar hosts its famous annual fair and large numbers of pilgrims visit the sacred lake and temple.
