📖 Description

Pushkar Lake, also known as Pushkar Sarovar, is a sacred lake situated in the town of Pushkar in Rajasthan. It is surrounded by the Aravalli hills and is regarded in Hindu tradition as Tirtha Raj, meaning the "King of Pilgrimage Sites."

The lake is surrounded by 52 bathing ghats, where pilgrims perform religious rituals and take a sacred bath. More than 400 temples and numerous shrines are located around the lake, creating a distinctive spiritual landscape. Rajasthan Tourism describes Pushkar Lake as one of the most sacred lakes in Rajasthan.

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower at this location, and the sacred lake emerged at the place where the flower fell. This legend is closely connected with the origin of the name Pushkar.

The lake is especially important during Kartik Purnima, when thousands of pilgrims gather in Pushkar for religious bathing and the famous Pushkar Fair.

🏛 History

The history of Pushkar Lake is ancient. Archaeological and historical evidence indicates that the lake was already associated with pilgrimage many centuries ago. Wikipedia notes evidence dating its history back to at least the 4th century BCE, with inscriptions from the 2nd century BCE referring to the lake.

Over the centuries, the lake and its ghats received patronage from various rulers and devotees. The present landscape around the lake includes numerous temples, ghats and historic structures.
