๐ Lord Navagraha | ๐ Thingalur, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
Kailasanathar Temple at Thingalur is traditionally associated with Chandra (the Moon God) and is one of the nine temples included in the traditional Navagraha pilgrimage circuit. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Kailasanathar, while Chandra is worshipped as the associated planetary deity. Devotees visit the temple for traditional prayers connected with the Moon and for mental peace, emotional balance and well-being.
The temple is an ancient Shaiva shrine in the Cauvery Delta and is traditionally connected with the Appar (Tirunavukkarasar) tradition. According to the well-known temple legend, the Shaiva devotee Appoothi Adigal lived at Thingalur and was a great admirer of Appar.
The temple's association with Chandra is explained through traditional accounts in which the Moon God worshipped Lord Shiva here and received relief from his difficulties. The name Thingalur itself is traditionally associated with Thingal, the Tamil word for the Moon.
The temple therefore has both Shaiva significance and an important place in the traditional Navagraha pilgrimage circuit.
