Umaid Bhawan Palace was commissioned by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1928 during a period of severe famine in Jodhpur. The construction project provided employment and support to thousands of people affected by the famine.
The palace was designed by Henry Vaughan Lanchester and constructed primarily from sandstone and marble. It became the residence of the Jodhpur royal family and remains one of the world's notable large private residences.
The palace is also known as Chittar Palace because much of its stone was sourced from Chittar Hill. Its architecture represents a distinctive combination of Indian and Western design traditions.
