Mehrangarh Fort was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur and a ruler of the Rathore Rajput dynasty. The fort was established on an isolated rocky hill south of the earlier capital at Mandore, providing a strong strategic defensive position.
The fort continued to be expanded and strengthened by successive rulers over several centuries. As a result, its architecture represents different periods of Rajput history, with additions continuing into later centuries.
The fort has witnessed conflicts involving the Rathores, Mughals and neighbouring kingdoms. Its walls still preserve evidence of historic battles, including cannonball marks associated with attacks on the fort.
Today, Mehrangarh Fort is managed by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and is recognised as an important centre for preserving the artistic and cultural heritage of Marwar and Jodhpur.
