The construction of Udaipur City Palace began in 1559 under Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder of Udaipur. The palace complex was subsequently expanded and modified by successive rulers of the Mewar dynasty over several centuries.
As different generations of rulers added new buildings and courtyards, the palace developed into the extensive architectural complex visible today.
The palace served as the principal royal residence and administrative centre of the Mewar rulers. Its elevated position overlooking Lake Pichola also provided a strategically important location for the royal city.
Today, parts of the complex continue to be associated with the Mewar royal family, while other sections operate as museums and heritage attractions open to visitors.
